Base Set (JP) (retired)
The origin point. Released in Japan in October 1996, the Base Set introduced the world to Pokémon as a physical, collectible object — and remains the most historically significant release in the hobby. The genesis of the mania you see today.
The first time the world was introduced to the iconic 旧裏 (old-back) prints, with ‘Pocket Monsters’ text and crest, embellished across the rear. A vintage that only spanned the first 2 generations of Pokémon, before referring to the commonly-known, modern version.
Some truly classic artworks in there…
Issued in Japan on 20 October 1996 simply as the Expansion Pack (拡張パック) — there was nothing yet to distinguish it from.
